Academic Vocabulary Development and Differentiated Instruction in Math and Science
These events are now closed to new registrants. This special focus provides 13 events across all 5 boroughs, from late April through June. All modeled strategies invoke critical thinking in the content areas and are deeply connected to building content knowledge--they are not stand-alone literacy activities for math and science. This core premise has won over many teachers and administrators across the nation and has given them the freedom to tie academic vocabulary seamlessly to curriculum as they see fit, making it more relevant for students. Be a MS or HS host school for one of these events! Concept Construxions® for math and science will be shipped directly to schools upon participation. Our instructional system for teaching academic vocabulary that is currently employed by districts around the nation and beyond, Concept Construxions articulates academic vocabulary learning through the grades (vertically) and across the curriculum (horizontally) using a patent-pending color-shape system. The visual cues and kinesthetic nature of our manipulatives build a fully-fashioned yet intuitive and flexible system for districts, schools and individual classrooms. Due to its conceptual focus, this physically durable product will not only survive classroom wear and tear, it will also survive changes in standards, assessments, textbooks, and scope & sequences.

Reflect to Project: Curriculum Maps from Every Angle
These events are now closed to new registrants. On Friday, May 21 we invite educators to The Rockefeller University for a full day of curriculum map inventorying. This is a prime moment in the year to reflect on what was planned, how it rolled out, and why students responded the ways they did. Teachers bring their own curriculum maps and plans for one 2009-10 math or science course, and we guide them through a strategic analysis protocol that queries everything from content coverage, pacing issues and skills trajectories to areas of student misconceptions, formative assessment pathways, and target moments for differentiated instruction. Strategies for correcting and improving curriculum design and delivery will be discussed, and teachers will have time to project for the next iteration of the course. Educators in all grades 6-12 welcomed.

Chancellor's PD Day: Events on June 10
These events are now closed to new registrants. Please register for one of the other academic vocabulary workshop dates (see above).
We invite educators to a Manhattan location for an entire day of academic vocabulary and differentiated instruction events (full-day participation only, please). In the morning, all participants will experience the academic vocabulary workshop for math and science described above. Concept Construxions® for math and science will be shipped directly to schools upon participation. In the afternoon, we will run two content-rich differentiated instruction events, one for math and one for science. Educators in all grades 6-12 welcomed.
