What is it?
The
Program is a comprehensive package of professional development services
and secondary science curriculum materials that integrates the disciplines
of biology and chemistry over two school years. EduChange, Inc. is collaborating
with The
Rockefeller University
to deliver this inquiry-based, laboratory-intensive program that models
the ways in which science is actually practiced—while still meeting standardized
testing requirements.
 |
Integrates
biology and chemistry concepts in 5 real-world contexts: Environmental
Dynamics; Genetic Unity & Diversity; Food, Nutrition & Fitness; The
Quest For Energy; and Health, Drugs & Disease
|
 |
Spirals
standards-based concepts and skills over time to help students build
in-depth understandings of scientific models and processes. The Program
is aligned with The National Science Standards, a variety of state
standards, and SAT II exam requirements in biology and chemistry.
|
 |
Provides
teachers with an extensive electronic resource package of tested lesson
plans, laboratory experiences, hands-on activities, standardized test-prep,
content resources & rationales for all aspects of program design
|
 |
Taps
Internet and other classroom technologies for cutting-edge scientific
information, references, research, molecular modeling freeware, and
more
|
 |
Incorporates
on- and off-site professional development that is customized to the
needs of your school, including a Summer Invitational for participating
teachers
|
|
 |
Embeds
the scientific peer review process to authentically address cooperative
learning, non-fiction reading & writing, and scientific model-building
skills
|
 |
Coordinates
a two-year assessment system to help teachers gather and analyze a
variety of qualitative and quantitative student data over time
|
 |
Offers
real-time access to scientists in the field, including curricular
references to current scientific research

| "The
Investigations in Biology and Chemistry Program is an innovative [program]
that provides a realistic, detailed plan to reform secondary school
science education through the development of an integrated two-year
curriculum framework. This well-conceived program brings three highly-respected
institutions and a vast array of talented, qualified people from many
fields together for the benefit of secondary students. With an extensive
professional development component, a curriculum plan built upon solid
educational principles, an ongoing collaboration between scientists
and educators, and a clear vision of how to make this all happen,
The Investigations in Biology and Chemistry Program offers an exciting
glimpse of what the future of secondary school science could look
like." |

will never teacher straight Chemistry again…this course makes it SO
much more interesting for students." |

"Kids
are really doing science, they’re really doing experiments. They’re
really figuring out things. It’s very experiential, they can really
do science and see science. It’s also very strong in terms of content
and intellectual rigor, in terms of asking kids to make choices and
decisions in collecting and evaluating data. That is a really powerful
combination, because it really pushes the skills and the content without
one being at the expense of the other." |

"I
tell people I hit the jackpot with this science program because I
think that the teachers in the school have gotten better because of
the professional development work that’s been done with them. It’s
not just that we hired good people, but we have put time and money
into their professional development and it has really paid off. It’s
science how I would want it to be taught."

| "Year
2 is actually better for me because I already knew what to expect
when it came to the labs, most handouts, and the Strand Maps. Going
at a faster pace made it a little more difficult, but I think it's
great preparation for next year and even college." |
